Hanging wallpaper is not difficult when there are specific guidelines to take. Are you excited to jazz up your interior?

If wallpaper is a new venture for you, be sure to select your variety carefully by reading the various kinds at the store. Installation will vary moderately depending on the type you decide on. Pre-pasted options are outfitted with a dry paste that is on the surfaces’ backside. This is initialized by using water, as opposed to unpasted wallpapers need a wet paste employed with installation. The method for installing is generally the same; however, the instructions can marginally vary so read thoroughly.

Measure, cut, activate with H20 or paste and hang are the general guidelines for installing wallpaper.

Wall Preparation

Your surface area and work enviroment needs to be clean and clear in advance of wallpaper installation. Remove wall fixtures and ensure electrical outlets are switched off. Use TSP or some wall cleaner to clean the wall work surface and prep it by ensuring any past wallpaper or paste is taken off.

Depend on a premixed universal primer designated for wallpaper to ensure your surface is prepared. Priming the wall is a crucial step when you are affixing unpasted wallpaper since it allows easier removal of the wallpaper later.

Measure & Activate the Paper

Start by calculating the length of the wall. Add four inches to this number and then trim your wallpaper. The goal is to allow the paper to overlap the baseboard and the ceiling by roughly two inches.

Generate pattern match via random, straight across, or drop match.

If hanging unpasted wallpaper…

You can either apply the paste to the wall or paste the paper. If you apply the paste to the walls, cover the area for one strip only be sure to apply the product evenly. When sticking the wallpaper, begin in the centre and work away towards the edges while you evenly cover the wallpaper. Afterward, carefully fold the pasted sides of the moistened strip together and allow them to relax for three minutes. This method is called booking.

Explore your preference with unpasted wallpaper to determine if you prefer applying the paste to the wall or to the rear of the paper. Only work with one region at a time if you are evenly applying the paste straight to the wall. If you're pasting the wallpaper, diligently apply an even layer to the back of the wallpaper. Start in the centre of the wallpaper and work to the outside edges. Booking the wallpaper is a necessary step that is accomplished by loosely folding the moistened strip of wallpaper and positioning the pasted portions together. Allow the already folded wallpaper to sit in this way for three minutes.

Pro Tip: If hanging up heavyweight wallpapers, particularly unpasted designs with flock, cork, or embroidery, choose a clear, stain-free heavyweight pre-mixed paste adhesive as opposed to a light-medium weight clear paste for the best results.

When hanging pre-pasted wallpaper…

Roll your cut strip loosely and have the patterned side facing inward and the pasted side to the outside. Activate the paste by dipping the rolled piece for 30 seconds into tepid water. You may also rely on a wallpaper hand sprayer that releases a fine water mist to switch on the pasted segment.

We love this strategy and advocate spraying in long strokes the duration of the paper thoroughly moisten the back of the strip. Be sure you focus on the edges to ensure even water application. Fold each end sections of your moist strip toward the centre with the pasted portions together. Carefully align the sides so they don’t dry up. Lastly, roll-up the strip such as a loose newspaper and let it sit for 3 minutes to permit the paper to relax and the paste to become totally activated.

Hanging your first strip

Move your strip to the wall when the booking process is finished after three minutes. Carefully unfold the strip and hang it up. Let the wallpaper overhang on the ceiling and also the baseboard. Use a plastic smoother, broad knife or smoothing paint brush to clear out any air bubbles. Ensure that the piece has adequate contact with the wall by pressing on the wallpaper. Be delicate so the wallpaper will not be distorted or stretched. Lightly press on the seam to flatten them with a seam roller.

Proceeding to the second strip

If you are butting the next strip up to the first, position the second strip of wallpaper to the side of the first strip. Smoothly press the wallpaper firmly. Eliminate any left over paste by washing the ceiling as well as the baseboard after. The aim is for your seams to possess a tight, vertical fit. Ensure there isn't any air bubbles in the paste.

Upon installing 3 wallpaper pieces and removing any excess paste, step back and analyze your work. Check the sections for color and style uniformity. Proceed in the same manner, three panels each time around your space. Matching patterns or geometric designs may require extra selvage trimming to create colour matching across seams. Tune in to your body and take breaks when you notice your arms and eyes are getting tired. Don’t rush your wallpaper project. Adhere to the above steps to hang the rest of your pieces. After all sections have been mounted, carefully cut along the ceiling and the baseboards. Use a razor knife plus a guide to slowly get rid of the excess without tearing.
