Company Origins

This business was born in 1866 with Thomas Stockwell Simms founding it. He was an American Civil War Veteran who made a decision to make an investment into a Portland, Maine brush and broom organization with his soldiers’ back pay and bonus. This business migrated in 1872 to Saint John, New Brunswick. Saint John became popular worldwide for their contributions to shipbuilding.

Simms underwent numerous issues but was a capable man who continued and found success. He lost two spouses and struggled with a terribly devastating factory fire. Nevertheless, he did not give up and was fortunate to forge ahead in spite of these tragedies.

Simms was an avid traveller. In the 1900s, he was one of the primary brush manufacturers to travel to China to exclusively purchase bristles. He participated in the lay missionary initiative. The Simms Memorial Baptist Church can be found in India and is considered to be a significant enterprise.

Lewis Wesley Simms

After the founding father passed away in 1908, Lewis Wesley Simms took over operating the Company. Over the next fifty years, Lewis Simms presided as the President. LW had a powerful presence and commanding personality. He expanded the organization his father began from local to countrywide. Lewis designed automated brush-making equipment and endorsed it, changing the industry forever. Lewis Simms excelled in the Canadian industry arena and found national acceptance. He was notably the president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and also the Canadian Manufacturing Association.

LW Simms was posthumously inducted into the Canadian Hardware Houseware Manufacturing Association’s Industry Hall of Fame and the New Brunswick Business Hall of Fame. Simms was obviously a visionary and a master of employee relations. His organized and efficient approach allowed the company to flourish into the success it is today.

The founder’s great-grandson, Thomas Stockwell Simms III proceeds growing the company’s solid integrity, building on the heritage that founded the business. Establishing strong leadership, creative and experienced employees and vibrant merchandising, the plant invested in quality equipment to supply innovative new products.

Nowadays, customer service, head office and our marketing and advertising are situated in Saint John, NB. Erin, Ontario is where Simms has their manufacturing facility and warehouse. The success of the company can be attributed to reliable quality, supreme service and positive business ethics.
